Good forecast = tough conditions

Despite the decent forecast it was a tough day at Ho’okipa today. Loads of really good sailors out but no one really got the hang of the conditions. Graham had the move of the day with a big 360 which I sadly missed! Sorry Graham!!

Tried a new angle on Ho’okipa as shown in this Rough Cut of Bernd Roediger. I think it works really well:

On the ‘Valley Isle’…

Just arrived on ‘The Valley Isle,’ or Maui as we know it, which gets its name from the valley between Haleakala and the West Maui Mountains and also happens to create the great winds at Ho’okipa and the entire North Shore. The first day was small but that’s fine as the journey has taken its toll! The forecast for Friday and the weekend looks decent so all’s good.

Graham was keen to show what he’s been up to and so the first rough cut from this trip goes to him.

Maui time: rough cut Thomas Traversa

Here is a rough cut of Thomas ripping up Ho’okipa last April. We should get some fresh ones in soon, we just arrived on the rock ourselves and the forecast looks good! Got a couple of short movie projects to shoot, one with Levi and Keith and maybe we’ll get some more action of Thomas as well! Maybe he comes, maybe he doesn’t, we don’t know – he goes ‘just like that‘!

New deadline umi Bonaire editing comp

umi Bonaire editing competition newsflash: with the slight delay of the uploads of the action clips and due to lots a reactions from contestants, we have decided to postpone the deadline for the umi Bonaire editing competition by one month. This way everybody gets a fair chance to come up with the best action video they can, and a shot a winning one of our great prizes.

The new deadline for the submission of your video into the comp will be 1 January 2012. This gives everyone at least two months to make a sick video and send it to us. For the details on sending the finished vids please check About the comp.

We’ve also slightly changed the voting system so that the clips that are up earlier don’t have an advantage over the clips that might be sent in last minute. After the deadline we will put your videos up on our special Vimeo channel and publish them on the umi Facebook page. The number of likes each video has on Vimeo and the umi Facebook page will be taken as the ‘public vote’. The other two votes still come from the riders (1) and the umi crew (1). Good luck!

Get Graham in the AWT Super Session

The upcoming AWT event has a people’s choice event, a Super Session, with 5 riders.  Vote for Graham, as in the words of Levi Siver ‘he’s a ripper’ and then he can sail Ho’okipa with only 4 other guys!! We think you should also vote for Camille and Bouj as well seeing as they rip and we’re sure they’d love to sail Ho’okipa uncrowded… Looks like you also get the chance to win a sail so it’s a win-win deal.

Use the widget on right of the AWT homepage to cast your votes. You get 10 votes which you can use all for Graham or spread them around if you want.

Portrait of Mark Angulo

In the winter of 2010/2011 we spent two months filming on Maui. The Valley Isle remains the Mecca of windsurfing, and one of its godfathers has to be Mark Angulo. Brendan Pyatt talks about meeting his hero.

‘I obviously knew who Mark was, pretty much everyone interested in wavesailing has heard of him, his antics and his family as they are such a huge part of windsurfing culture. But the first time I saw his sailing at Ho’okipa is was really impressed by his incredible talent. This combined with his years sailing this spot means he is really entertaining to watch and is definitely one of the stand outs. It’s amazing to watch one the older guys out on the water pushing it so hard. He picks up heaps of waves and then just does his thing on them which, it has to be said, more often than not ends with a mean looking wipe-out! He totally has his own agenda out there and its really refreshing. I guess being older and not competing has given him the mind space and confidence to explore his own thing; bizarre tricks above hefty waves.’

‘During the interviews and shooting at his shaping bay it became quickly apparent that he is a really humble guy who’s totally at peace with himself, which is something I was surprised about, given his colourful past! I must admit I was pretty star struck and nervous but after a while I just forgot I was working with one of my hero’s and just had a cool time hanging out with a decent, down to earth guy. We had to leave out so much of the interviews which was a shame as he said a bunch of great things about various topics but we hope this clip does credit to his sailing and also gives an honest insight into the character that’s Mark Angulo.’
