Jamie Hancock wins Ireland UKWA event

Look at that cheeky grin

From 6 to 10 May 2009 Ireland hosted the first leg of the UKWA wave tour where Jamie Hancock sailed to victory after a tough final against John Skye. A sweet result for Jamie, who just came back from an injury to his knee playing football.

How was the knee?
‘It was going pretty well, I just seemed to get straight back into it with no worries. I was just enjoying being back on the water to be honest.’

What were the conditions like?
‘Before the event it was pretty good but the conditions really peaked during the event week. It worked out perfectly with a joy first day of competition with very strong cross offshore wind and logo high sets all day. The best day for me.’

Sounds pretty hardcore. What gear were you using?
‘My kit was totally sic. I used the 3.3m Gun Sails Steel with my smallest Quatro twinfin. The boards still held the tight turns despite the 50 knots which I think was the key to beating Skyeboy in the final.’

How did the final go?
‘Pretty good, I picked up my highest scoring wave of the day in the first two minutes of the heat so with a total of two waves counting for the heat I had plenty of time to relax and get a second good scoring wave. I knew that the other guys would definitely be ripping so I pushed things a little more with harder, tighter turns and later hits which luckily paid off.’

So you could sit and watch the action in the double elimination.
‘Yes, after the first day of competition they had run most of the double elimination apart from the final six. The next day they took us down the coast to Stradbally where it was mast high plus and blowing about 50 knots; it was going off. John Skye was doing well and made it to the final. It was really cold in the water and I couldn’t see any sets coming in because of all the spray flying around. I didn’t see John once throughout my heat so I had no idea if he was doing well or if he was swimming. He won the first heat but still had to beat me once more to claim the title. Fortunately I beat him in the second final to take the event win! I got a couple of reasonable waves that didn’t just close out and landed my two jumps and I guess the most important thing was that I didn’t lose my kit and swim my hole heat!’

Was this win the highlight of your windsurfing career?
‘For sure it was one of the highlights, winning an event is always good, especially in such epic conditions! I have been to Brandon Bay in Ireland a few times over the years but this was easily the best conditions I’ve ever had there.’

Ricardo destroys Pozo!

JC/PWA

JC/PWA

We just posted a new video of full on action: Ricardo Campello from PWA 2007 & 2008 in Pozo.  Ricardo is a really full on sailor in high winds, he goes hard, crashes a lot and is super radical. How he never hurts himself is incredible. Last year (2008) he was on fire both in the air with triple forward attempts and on the wave, nailing the wave grubby. It was brilliant to watch both during heats and freesailing.  A shame he didn’t have what it takes to stop Victor in the final but then Victor is the king of competition in Pozo!!

Our web guru is in Chile at the moment so the video is not showing up in the ‘clips’ section yet, but you can check it out here:

Sal roundup…

Brendan and Mart working hard at Punta Preta

Brendan and Mart working hard at Punta Preta

The PWA comp at Sal was brilliant (again!) this year and it was great to have both of us there working together.

The first day was a bit of nightmare as I didn’t have all my gear due to TAP loosing my bag! I filmed using a borrowed tripod and was still able to get some decent clips but I really missed my solid, levelling tripod…

It was the first comp where all the sailors had the umi logos on their boards and there was buzz going around about umi and what we are trying to acheive! It felt brilliant to have sailors asking to have the umi logo on their kit.  Trying to make a career out of windsurfing is really tough, especially in these testing times.

Kauli had a great comp (when doesn’t he?), Thomas and Jonas both put in solid performances but it was hard for Musso – new kit and a foot injury meant it wasn’t to be for him…

We got some great footage from Sal and will be putting together a couple of web videos from the event – one about the umi ‘team’ and another one about Josh – who was inspirational! Keep checking the site for more info about these!

Polakow loves umi

Has waveriding legend Jason Polakow joined team umi? No, we can’t afford him (yet)… it’s just Alex sticking an umi logo on his board. That’ll teach you for waking up the team at 7.30 in the morning looking for your harness Pozza!!

the logo = the action

umi supports radical sailors. radical sailors support umi. I guess that’s it…

Thomas back from injury

Thomas is back on track and decided to test his ankle in the waves of Fuerteventura. Nice one Thomas, welcome back!

Dedication

Jonas didn’t have any stickers, so he decided to draw his own umi logo on his board. Now that’s what we call dedication!

Busy man

The media sure know to find Kauli. At breakfast he was already wearing a wire, these guys want to know everything!

Cabo Verde: Kauli takes second place, Thomas flies into 7th

After having spent a good 11 hours on the beach of Punta Preta today, a dramatic final saw Josh Angulo win the Cabo Verde wave event today. Kauli got some sick waves and even landed a goiter in the wave but it wasn’t meant to be. Respect Kauli, you gave it all you had and even having to avoid some stupid kiters didn’t seem to put you off… If it had been us on the mic, we would have cheered every wave you had…

Thomas was also on fire today, he advanced several rounds before he was stopped by himself Ross Williams and Brawzinho. He was only late for being late a couple of times, and got some sick waves that made us all smile. Well done Thomas! (pics soon, Carter is being bullied by McKercher, who’s had 1 too many…)

This is it for now from Cabo Verde, Brendan and Alex are leaving tonight, lets see if TAP takes their stuff or keeps it in Lisbon for a couple of days…
